Texas Academy Registered Dietitian Linda Farr participates in “Westside Healthy Kids Breakfast” in San Antonio with Congressman Charlie Gonzalez; August 15, 2011Congressman Charles Gonzalez represents the 20th District of Texas, which includes the Westside of San Antonio. He is currently serving his 7th term and is the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, focusing on issues which affect the Hispanic community. The one-hour program this morning focused on numerous grants that SA Metro Health has received which fund efforts to reverse obesity in our community–specifically the Por Vida program and the Healthy Kids Healthy Communities partnership.
I was able to print off some ADA materials about federal programs that we support. I also included a letter about health reform from ADA Jessie Pavlinac to President Obama. I gave the folder of materials to his aids and then I handed him a hand written note about how RDs support him and his health and wellness programs. He smiled while reading the card. Afterward we were able to take pictures with him. He said “Yes, let’s take a picture with my dietitians.” This is my photo from my camera but his PR people were there and took more pictures. They will send them to me and I can forward them on if you want.
